Wildlife of the Yukon

These are just a few of the more popular animals known to the Yukon.

First is the might white bear or the Polar Bear. This photo was taken at a local museum and is the largest Polar Bear taken in the Yukon. To find these bears you have to travel about another 500 miles north of Whitehorse to the tip of the Teritory and the Beaufort Sea.

Next is the Grizzly Bear, very common to all of the Yukon. These bears can break the neck of a moose with one swipe of thier paw.

The moose is the most popular hunted game in the Yukon. The meat is very excellant to the taste and makes a fine meal. I have taken one that was estimated to be 1500 pounds on the hoof, but there have been larger animals taken.

Sheep are common in the Yukon and we have 3 types, Stone sheep pictured here and Fanine and Dall Sheep as well, the Dall sheep being the most common.

The lynx is a common feline in the Yukon and is valued for it's fur, although trapping is almost nonexistant. Some are live trapped for tranplant in other areas throught North America.

The cougar is a relative new comer to the Yukon. The deer population has expanded to the Yukon and so has the cougar, deer being it's favorite food. There have been a few sightings in the Yukon over the last few years.
